Historic Marker Program, where to begin your research, strategies which will facilitate your search, and other exciting programs and services offered by the Jefferson County Historical Commission.


The Commission was established in 1971 by an Act of the Alabama State Legislature to document and recognize the historic resources of Birmingham and Jefferson County.

The Commission responds to inquiries concerning the rehabilitation and restoration of historic properties, administers the Historical Marker Program, and recognizes achievement in scholarship and preservation through the annual Thomas Jefferson Awards.
